Murat Kurum

Murat Kurum was born on May 7, 1976, in Çankaya, Ankara. He completed his primary education in Ankara and Mardin. He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering in Konya. He completed his master's degree in Urban Transformation. Between 1999 and 2005, he worked at dozens of different construction sites across various parts of Türkiye.

Between 2005 and 2006, Kurum served as a specialist at the TOKİ Ankara Implementation Department. After holding various positions within TOKİ, he became the General Manager of Emlak Konut GYO AŞ in 2009.

The two largest public offerings in the history of the Republic were carried out during his tenure at Emlak Konut.

In 2018, Murat Kurum was appointed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the Minister of Environment and Urbanization in the first cabinet of the Presidential Government System. Throughout his tenure, together with his entire team, Kurum worked meticulously to develop cities and make them more resilient through a new approach to urbanism while protecting the environment. In addition to projects such as social housing and nation gardens, he drew attention with his dedicated efforts in disaster-affected areas. During his term, he also made significant efforts to expand the Zero Waste Movement, which was launched under the auspices of First Lady Emine Erdoğan.

On July 2, 2024, Murat Kurum was reappointed as the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. As the minister coordinating the Reconstruction Mobilization of the Century launched after the February 6 earthquakes, he closely monitored the ongoing work through frequent site visits. During this process, 455,357 independent units were completed and delivered to earthquake-affected citizens within two years.

With a presidential decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Murat Kurum was appointed as the 'COP31 President' for the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be hosted by Türkiye for the first time.

Murat Kurum also led the implementation of many innovative urban development initiatives, including the enactment of Türkiye's first climate law, disaster-resilient cities, and smart cities.

He currently serves as the Chair of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye's Environment Commission and as an AK Party Member of Parliament representing Istanbul. He continues his public service in line with a vision of sustainable urbanization and environmental protection.

Murat Kurum is married and the father of three children.
