Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sütyemez specialises in fruit cultivation and plant breeding and is one of the pioneering figures in walnut breeding and cultivation in Türkiye. His breeding work has resulted in 26 registered/patented walnut varieties. He is currently the scientist who has developed Türkiye’s first and only hybrid varieties. The varieties he bred and registered, ‘Maraş 18’ and ‘Dırılış’, are now the most widely produced walnut varieties in Türkiye and are successfully grown in about 23 countries. Through his research and practical work on walnuts, he established the Genetic Resources Centre (SEKAMER) at KSÜ, which holds a very rich genetic potential.
He carries out critical genetic and breeding work on strategic plant species that are drought- and water-scarcity-tolerant, in response to the negative effects of climate change on agricultural ecosystems.
Through his scientific projects, international collaborations and practical work guiding producers, he contributes to developing the scientific foundations of modern fruit growing in Türkiye and climate-resilient agricultural strategies.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sütyemez has taken part in many TÜBİTAK projects and has 179 research articles and conference papers published in internationally and nationally respected journals.
