COP31 Background

WHAT IS COP31?

A global response to the climate crisis. Discover the purpose, structure, and key objectives of COP31 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

What is COP31 and What is Its Main Purpose?

COP31 (31st Conference of the Parties) is the latest session of the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Its core purpose is to bring countries together to strengthen global climate action, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and accelerate the transition toward a sustainable and low-carbon future.

At COP31, international climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and earlier mechanisms like the Kyoto Protocol continue to guide negotiations. The primary objective remains to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels while advancing a resilient and carbon-neutral global economy.

Adaptation and Mitigation

Strengthening resilience to climate impacts (Adaptation) and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (Mitigation) are central pillars of COP31 discussions and global climate strategies.

Climate Finance

Mobilizing financial resources for clean energy, renewable energy, and energy efficiency projects is a key priority. Access to climate funds and technology transfer remains critical, particularly for developing countries.

COP31 Türkiye: Expected Impact and Key Agenda

As the host country of COP31, Türkiye will become a central hub of global climate diplomacy in 2026. The summit will bring together heads of state, ministers, scientists, private sector leaders, NGOs, and international organizations to shape the next phase of climate action.

The COP31 agenda is expected to focus on strengthening Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), climate finance mechanisms, energy transition, carbon reduction strategies, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and nature-based solutions. Critical global challenges such as sea-level rise, water scarcity, food security, and biodiversity loss will also be addressed through concrete climate risk management strategies.
